JASON WUERFEL IS GLAD TO BE BACK IN BUTLER FOR 2010;
BlueSox HEAD COACH IS HAPPY WITH NEXT
SUMMER'S TEAM
.
"I've very excited to be coming back to Butler.
I had one of the best baseball experiences of my life managing the BlueSox in 2009 and I couldn't pass up the opportunity
to come back in 2010",said Wuerfel. "I was impressed how knowledgable the fans are in Butler about the game
of baseball and humbled by their passion and support. I was satisfied that we were able to put a winning team on the
field in our first season, but I am returning with the feeling of some unfinished business as it is my goal to bring a Prospect
League Championship to Butler next summer," he said. "Since we had a late start recruiting players last year,
I was eager to get started putting the team together for 2010, and I feel like we have upped the ante considerably. We
have some very good players in 2009, but for 2010 Coah Sharrar, Leo and I have pieced together a roster full of potential
future Major Leaguers that the surrounding community will be both excited and proud to see represent Butler," stated
coach Wuerfel
Outfielders
-
Zach Duggan - Pittsburgh - Duggan is the every-day center fielder for Pittsburgh, and brings a lot of experience to our group
of outfielders. He knows what it takes to win and can beat you a lot of different ways - he is a terrific defensive
outfielder, baserunner, and situational hitter.
Max Vogel - Winthrop
- Vogel was the Post-Gazette's Prep Player of the Year in 2009 out of Hopewell High School and enters his freshman year at
a Winthrop program that has a long history of producing quality prospects. He is a left-handed hitting outfielder with
a plus arm and good range.
Cam Squires - Yale - Squires is highly regarded by his coaching
staff at Yale, where they expect him to hit at the top of the order as a true freshman. He is a high-energy player who
can change games with his speed.
Ben Carson - George Mason - Carson is a dynamic left-handed hitting
outfielder similar to 2009 Prospect League All-Star and BlueSox left fielder Brian Billigen. He gained a lot of accolades
out of nearby California Area high school, where he was highly recruited by several NCAA DI schools before choosing George
Mason.
Infielders -
Adam Jury
- Slippery Rock - Jury had a breakout year at Slippery Rock last spring where he hit .395 with a .522 slugging percentage.
He is a third basemen that can play short or
second in a pinch and gives us an experienced hitter in the middle of the lineup.
Jonathan
Craycraft - Murray State - Craycraft didn't need much time to adjust to NCAA DI baseball, hitting .337 as a true freshman
in 2009 while playing nearly flawless defense. He is a talented hitter with a very high ceiling and I expect him to
hit toward the top of the BlueSox lineup on a daily basis.
Tyler Sciacca
- Villanova - Sciacca gained a lot of experience at Villanova as a freshman and is expected to step in and be the every day
short stop as a sophomore in 2010. His coaching staff believes he will be one of the best defensive infielders in the
Big East Conference next spring.
Kody Campbell - Southeast Missouri State - Campbell is 6'4"
left-handed hitting power hitter that will make an immediate impact in the middle of the BlueSox lineup. After smacking
five extra-base hits in just 47 at-bats as a freshman at NCAA DI Southeast Missouri State, Campbell was one of the best hitters
in the KIT League last summer, hitting .311 with a .465 on-base percentage and .411 slugging percentage. He has the
utility to play first or third base, either corner outfield position, and could catch in an emergency situation.
Austin Wulf - Tennessee Tech - Wulf was a pre-season Prep All-American at Blackhawk high school where
his resume included a 36-game hitting streak. A super utility man, Wulf can play third, short, second, and all outfield
positions. He has a great approach at the plate, hits left-handed, and is a near guarantee to give you a quality at-bat
each time up.
Catchers -
Kevan Smith - Pittsburgh
- Smith started his career at Pitt as a quarterback for the football team before making the full-time switch to baseball as
a redshirt sophomore. He is a physically gifted athlete who surprised a lot of scouts by hitting .363 with a .425 on-base
percentage and .520 slugging percentage in his first season of college baseball. He should be one of the elite hitters
in the Prospect League next summer.
John Sulzicki - Connecticut - Sulzicki is a powerful left-handed
hitting catcher who can also play 1st base. He had a breakout summer in the Atlantic Baseball Confederation League,
hitting .372 with 10 doubles and 2 home runs.
Ty Finley - Menlo
- Finley is an experienced catcher that plays in a NCAA DIII Conference in California with a reputation of producing top-flight
baseball talent. He gives us a great amount of depth behind the plate and will be a big asset to the team.
Pitchers
-
RHP Corey Young - Lafayette - Young comes highly recommended for his ability and character. He mixes and upper 80s fastball
with a hard-breaking 12-to-6 breaking ball that helped him strike out 23 batters in a 9-inning game as a local prep star.
RHP JR Leonardi - Pittsburgh - Leonardi has a high, over the top arm slot and throws with hard, downward
angle that should get a lot of ground balls. He has a command of three pitches, and is an advanced pitcher for a true
freshman. He has a lot of upside and we expect great things out of him.
RHP
Tim Geil - Columbia - Geil was Western Pennsylvania's AA League Pitcher of the Year as a senior after going 10-2 with a 1.08
ERA and 128 strikeouts. He is a big, strong, hard-nosed competitor that also captained his prep wrestling and football
teams. He will play a big role in our success on the mound next summer.
RHP
Brian Warheit - Seton Hill - Warheit was a workhorse for us last summer and we expect him to jump back into his role in the
starting rotation. He is a competitor on the mound and gives you everything he has every time out. He knows how
to pitch, change speeds, and work both sides of the plate.
RHP DJ
Cannon - Seton Hill - Cannon was one of the top pitchers on the Seton Hill staff last spring when he posted a 3-2 record and
a 2.82 ERA. His experience and versatility as both a starter and reliever will give our staff a big boost this summer.
RHP Derek Puluso - Point Park - Puluso showed a lot of promise after joining us late in the season
last year and I only expect him to get better next year. He has a cut fastball he throws in the upper 80s that can cause
a lot of problems for hitters on both sides of the plate.
RHP Ryan
Thompson - Connecticut - Thompson is a sinkerball pitcher that the staff at UCONN is really high on. He sits in the
upper 80s with a plus breaking ball and will be terrific out of the pen for us this coming summer.
RHP Vinny Nittoli - Xavier - Nittoli is a product of Pine-Richland High School, where he a standout
on the football field as a linebacker in addition to his play on the baseball diamond. He caught the eye of NCAA DI
Xavier with a fastball that tops 90mph and a plus breaking ball. I'm excited to have him on the staff next summer.
RHP Ben Ballantine - Michigan - I believe Ballantine has the potential to be one of the top prospects
in the Prospect League. At 6'8" he is an intimidating figure on the mound and has a heavy fastball with a deceptive
delivery. I expect a lot of great things out of him this coming summer.
LHP
Matthew Broder - Michigan - Broder is a polished left-handed that will look to eat innings in our starting rotation. He
features a terrific change-up and knows how to keep hitters off-balance.
LHP
Josh Ziemba -Florida Tech Josh is a top notch pitcher- one of the best Florida high school standouts
and now playing in a great FL Tech Div 1 program. Josh will ad another lefty to our pitching staff and we
believe he will be another good young arm for us.
LHP Ben
Rawding - Mercyhurst - Rawding was one of the best prep left-handers in Western Pennsylvania before choosing to attend NCAA
DII baseball powerhouse Mercyhurst. His senior season he dominated the competition, going 9-0 with 75 strikeouts in
49 innings while only surrendering 14 hits and 3 runs.
